New Cameras: Feb. 15, 2001

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., 2:52 p.m. EST February 16, 2001 -- True to my word, here are some new Netcams. We've received dozens of new cams lately, and though we won't get through them all today, they'll be up soon.

This Lake Erie cam is pretty cool -- once you find it on this site. Check the left nav bar. The location is Eastlake, Ohio, and the cam is pointed northeast toward the harbor lights of the Chagrin River and adjacent Lake Erie. The Webmaster of the site, Jim Bonfanti, sent in the link -- thanks! I can almost feel the wind blowing off the water as I look at this cam ... And here I am, sitting in an office. Sigh.

Ready to hit the beach? Well, you'll be in the mood for it after checking out this beach cam from Ocean City, Md. It's a little fuzzy, but it still makes me wish for weather warm enough to enjoy a beach. Thanks to Bruce Campeggi of Baltimore for sending it in.

Baltimore locals will love this one -- the Maryland State Highway Administration hosts traffic cams for throughout Baltimore. Even better, the cams are accompanied by maps showing exactly which highway you're seeing. You do have to click a few layers before uncovering the cams, though -- and it's not very exciting for anyone outside the city. But it makes me wish that more cities had this kind of resource ... Thanks for sending it in, Bruce.

And for a different look at New England, check out the Dedham, Mass., weather cam. It's a view of a tree-filled rural (perhaps suburban) neighborhood that exudes peace and quiet. It almost makes me want to abandon city living altogether. Thanks to Dedham resident Paul Kinnaly for sending in the link.

For you surfing fans out there, here are a couple of sites for you. Both Surfline.com and Surfcheck.com offer views of beaches throughout North, Central and South America, and both also feature some locations from the Eastern Hemisphere. Both sites are pretty terrific -- there are some awesome ocean views among the occasional broken cam. The first has a wider selection and easier navigation, though.

Moving inland, check out the city of Memphis with these two netcams. The first offers a view of the Memphis skyline, while the second shows a nice riverfront view, complete with a bridge. They're kind of dark, but they give you an idea of what the city looks like. Thanks to Dan in Memphis for the link.

For a taste of winter (in case you're not experiencing enough where you live), check out these ski cams. Mountain High resort near Wrightwood, Calif., offers three different ski cams -- though only two worked for me. The view of the West Base cam is snow and a few trees; nothing too exciting. And I think the Top of Conquest cam would be pretty good, but it's very out of focus.

And to get out of the United States for a while, check out the cam for Carcross, Yukon, Canada. This cam, maintained by a resident of Carcross (population 450), is aimed from his house to the village, Lake Bennett and Caribou Mountain. It's a beautiful view, but it's hard to make out the village. It still makes me dispute the fact that there is anything more beautiful than Canada landscapes. The viewer who sent this in, Walt, agrees with me, I think.

One more from Canada: Check out the Toronto skyline from the airport. The cam includes a view of the SkyDome, the CN Tower, the downtown financial district and the Royal York Hotel. It's pretty neat. The second Toronto cam is set up at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel and shows of City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. Thanks the links, Walt!

OK, that's all I can muster for now. I still have many new cams to feature, but I'll keep you in suspense. Keep sending us ideas -- we love to travel the world virtually as much as you do!
